This fall we signed Isaac up for flag football. Isaac wasn't very excited but we told him he needed to give it a try. Isaac is only motivated if he knows how something is going to go. If he is unsure about an activity he'd rather just sit out. But we didn't really give him a choice because we knew he'd enjoy it. Royce signed him up and we waited to hear from the coach.
And we waited.
And finally Royce was at the Rec Center so he asked.
Royce: "Hey, my son is signed up for flag football and we haven't heard from the coach yet. Can you look it up?"
Rec person: "Yes, I see Isaac signed up here. His coach, Royce, should be contacting you soon."
Royce: "Ahhhh, did you say 'Royce?'"
Rec person: "Yes, Royce Purinton should be contacting you soon about practices."
Royce: "That's me. So I'm the coach, huh?"
Okay that might not be word for word but you get the idea. That's how Royce found out he was going to be a coach. He scheduled practices and met the 8 boys on the team. He quickly found he had a very energetic group of boys who had very little knowledge of football. He had his hands full.
Ironically Amelia and Caroline probably prepped him the most for coaching this hyperactive team. Royce quickly found to burn energy early in the practice, put actual tougher restrictions in place, and play non-football games to get the point across as well. He ended up doing a FANTASTIC job. The boys knew the plays, listened well, and improved SO much through the season. Royce was a proud coach, I was a proud wife and mother, and all of the parents were so proud of the improvement the team showed.
Isaac's personal best game was 2 touchdowns and a couple catches.
Way to go, Isaac!
I can just hear Royce say, "so I'm the coach huh!" How funny!
